Why Having Alts increase Gold/Hour
Why Having Alts increase Gold/Hour
In respond to Gevlon’s Post
No, I am not against his point.
But Rather I want to point out why people think (Or may be indeed there are) there is a synergy
- Time reduced on listing and buying (Gevlon’s point)
- Reduced some factor on price fluctuation (Since you had more way to get what good you want, e.g. Infinity Dust for Bags, can be from Gears (Disenchant) / Eternal Earth (JC/Disenchant) rather than LFCrafter)
- More Profession, really means more Gold/Hour! (Thus the Reason for this post)
Why More Gold/Hour
Said giving a profitable profession A, (Same apply to dailies as well)
There are Three Operation to earn gold
A1, yields A1g/hour
A2, yields A2g/hour
A3, yields A3g/hour
for A1g>A2g>A3g, a rational person will always pick A1 first…
the catch is, A1g will decrease if you keep doing Operation A1 …. (Making/Selling too much Netherweave bag, will result in returning bags, which increase the deposit cost and time needed) Diminishing_returns
Gaining access to an additional profession grant him more choices, (Think of open up new daily quests for a player, with similar Gold/Hour Ratio to the existing ones…)
Say Profession B, with A1>B1>A2>B2>A3>B3
With a player can only do 3 Operation,
Player with only A will do (A1,A2,A3)
Player with both will do (A1,B1,A2)
Which always had a higher Gold/Hour (B1 > A3) by definition
Exceptions
1. One operation already use up all the time of the player’s play time. (e.g. for Casual Traders or glyph making (Which need very long AFK time))
in that case, Since Player can only do one operation, picking one profession is enough
2. There exist one or two Master profession with All A > Bs
In which case, having another profession gives you no benefits at all…
However, Don’t
Don’t mistaken me of agreeing on leveling alts for profit
Even with DK, that’s a large chunk of time to spend, The extra Gold/Hour just couldn’t justify it.

Having multiple professions may or may not result in a higher profit per hour.
The main issue, as you pointed out, is the market for any specific item is limited and prices will go down if the offer is much greater than the demand.
As an aside, Gevlon is in the inscription business, the only profession which includes HUNDREDS of profitable recipes.
No other business has as many profitable designs. Jewelcrafting took a step forward with the new epic gem cuts but it is still a distant second as to the number of profitable recipes.
I dabble in several markets because
(1) I spend too much time in the AH.
(2) I want to maximize my profits and not my profits per hour.
(3) I can focus on a second or third profession when there is a price war in my main market.
(4) I like shifting the fair market value of items downward.
(5) I can consume a portion of my mats with another profession when I am overstock.
(6) I enjoy the analysis I perform when enterring a new market.
The last point being the most important.
Gevlon stopped at gold cap and his glyph business is the most efficient way for him to remain at or close to that cap.
Gevlon might call me a M&S for making less gold per hour than he does and for getting into markets which reduce my profit per hour.
I might call him a M&S for stopping at gold cap, but I won’t.
You have to keep in mind Gevlon is egocentric anti-social bastard who believes his perception of the world is the only valid one.
Do what makes you happy in-game while being self-sufficient. The rest, and what people think, does not matter one iota.

There is a major difference between the incentives of the traders. Gevlon trade as a mean to his goal (Raiding spot and self-sufficient). And you trade for fun.
That’s why he’ll stop at Gold cap, and you won’t. I guess that’s the reason.
I am kinda in the middle, I get pleasure when I find a new way to make profits, but at the same time that compete my limited play time with my gf.
Gold/Hour is a good indication of the gold making method, to determine which method is better for limited time. (Yet another article dusted in my draft pile)
As you said, Gevlon case is in my exception list, the inscription profession already use up his trade time.
I found true on the point you listed.
I also have alts in multiple market, as the glyph market is saturated in my server, I had to have other means to gather gold. And having alts helps a lot. (I had level them for fun, but not solely on gold making though…)
Finally, Thanks for the comment

Good article. As an alt-a-holic it is a topic of interest to me.
Please pell me more about the “glyph making (Which need very long AFK time)”
I cant find much afk time: the milling has to be done 5 at a time? so then I get say 60 or 70 stacks of pigment. then I afk while that is made into ink. then I need to make the dozens of individual glyphs. It is only the pigment to ink that I can AFK.
Anything you can suggest for legally making lots of glyphs would be appreciated!

First of all, thanks for reading and take time to comment.
The Crafting time can be AFK (if you craft for one or two week, you can swtich in and out of wow to other thing)
However the time used for milling and “start the next queue” cannot be legally AFK
To reduce the timeused, try bulk-glyph creation, and post partial stock on AH.
Then the time you used will be getting the return auction (Once per minutes/relogining) and listing them up (AFK time).
