OT: A Few Things To Avoid

This is a bit offtopic, so please allow me this pseudo-rant. Recently, two things happened that got me thinking. One was in game, and one was out of game.

First, the in-game thing: I had great success on my recent Yogg+1 kill, and I love my new Rusted Protodrake. I had offered to pay for a run, and was then contacted by the group that eventually ran me through Ulduar. It was great.

However, there was a misunderstanding: I was contacted about a week after the run by one of the members of the raid run, and that person said (I’m paraphrasing), “Um, what about the gold for that run?” I was surprised, and after some back and forth, it turns out that everyone in the run thought I was paying and I did not. We got the situation sorted out, I paid the appropriate amount, and there is (as far as I can tell) no acrimony.

This is my point though: before entering into any situation where you’re paying for a service, be very clear about the terms of the deal. This is basic advice, but it’s something that I didn’t do. This was the second time that I’d tried to buy an Ulduar run, and neither time did it go exactly as I expected. I would have proceeded differently if I’d known that I was paying for the run, ie: I sent everyone in the run a Lifelike Mechanical Toad as a thank-you gift. I would probably not have done that if I’d realized that this was a mercenary situation, and that I was “thanking” them with gold. So, that’s point #1- make sure there is a clear understanding on both sides of an agreement before contracting for services.

Second, the out of game thing: I got into a very minor spat with another blogger. I’m not going to link to the blog because, well, I don’t like how I was treated, and I wish that blogger ill (in-game only, of course). ANYWAYS, that person posed a question, I answered it, and he didn’t like my answer. So- and this is the part that I believe is problematic- he cut my response from his comments. When I posted a further response, he cut that as well. I do not understand the logic of cutting my posts- they were constructive, they answered the question, and I spent a good amount of time writing them.

This is point #2: we here at P3P will not, unless absolutely necessary, edit/cut a response. I’ve cut a few comments to various posts (mostly because they were ads for sex sites or something simillarly pornbot-esque), but generally it’s something I avoid. If you, dear reader, think we here at P3P are wrong, misinformed, etc., please say so. We can edit or cut any comment you leave, but unless you’re abusive, profane, or otherwise indecent, your comment will almost assuredly remain up for all to read. We won’t cut feedback because it’s inconvenient, or because the comment says something we don’t like. P3P is an open forum, and we like it that way.
